Thirty years later, there is no forgetting his worst public school memories—those days when a textbook passed slowly from student to student, finally reaching Sweeney, and a teacher would ask him to read aloud. After operating out of a former car wash for eight years, the Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program finally has a new home. On Wednesday, the Detroit nonprofit relocated to a 27,500-square-foot building on East Vernor Highway which houses two boxing rings, a training facility, computer lab, study rooms, and executive
