Community Cleanup and Back to School Bash Kicks off 2024-25 School Year

Our students ended the summer and kicked off the 2024-25 school year in true DBG style with a community cleanup and “Back to School” bash filled with fun and community connection. With trash bags in hand and smiles on their faces, they hit the streets to clean up the neighborhood around our campus, turning what could have been a chore into a chance to hang out and show some love to Detroit.

“Our mentors at DBG have always taught us to help the Earth and our community,” said Alton, who is going into 7th grade. “It feels good to give back to the place that gives us so much.”

“Just being with friends and helping the community really made it a great experience,” added Kaylee, another incoming 7th grader. “Cleaning up around DBG felt especially meaningful.”

After the cleanup, everyone gathered back at DBG for lunch, swapping stories about the weird stuff they found and sharing a few laughs. Then Coach Clay called a huddle, asking students to share what they’re grateful for and their favorite moments from summer.

Harmonie, DBG’s student council president, gave a shout-out to her peers for making the summer unforgettable, while other students offered advice for tackling the new school year.

The coaches chimed in with their own words of gratitude.

“Thank you to everyone who shows up every day,” Coach Morgan said. ” “I see so much effort, friendship, and kindness from you all, and I appreciate every single one of you.”

“You guys made such great progress,” Coach Isiah told his 5th and 6th grade math group. “I can’t wait to see what you all accomplish this school year!”

The action continued with a lineup of summer fun. There was water balloon dodgeball, Family Feud, and the crowd-favorite, a dunk tank.

“The dunk tank is always a good vibe,” said Messiah, a soon-to-be 11th grader. “My favorite thing about DBG this summer was everything. The best parts were just being with friends and interacting with the coaches. It’s like building a family bond.”

As the organized activities wrapped up, students enjoyed free time, playing basketball and football and making thank-you cards. They also got their faces painted, nails done, and even got back to school haircuts. The day ended with another group meal.

One of the most exciting moments of the day came with a backpack giveaway, hooking up every student with a fresh backpack and all the supplies needed to crush the new school year.

DBG’s Back to School bash wasn’t just about having fun; it was about building community, showing gratitude, and making special memories. Here’s to an incredible school year ahead.
