Our DBG graduates are leaders and King Bethel is a prime example. A 2024 DBG grad currently studying sociology at Wayne State University, King has been appointed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer as the only youth member of Michigan’s School Safety and Mental Health Commission.

He brings a vital perspective that will help shape policies that impact youth mental health across the state.

“I’m very excited,” King says. “To be the only young person on the commission means a lot. I feel like all of my experience helped prepare me for and secure this opportunity, and DBG was a huge part of that.”

Created under the 2022 State School Aid Act, the School Safety and Mental Health Commission works to reduce youth suicides and improve mental health for students across Michigan. Appointed by the governor, commissioners meet regularly to develop statewide recommendations that support kids and families.

King earned his seat at the table through a long application process supported by the Skillman Foundation. Applicants were asked to choose a commission, then submit essays showcasing their experiences and perspectives. Through his dedication, leadership, and experience, King stood out as a clear choice.

“My whole life, being a part of DBG taught me how to be a leader,” he says. “I’ve learned what it means to give back, to work hard, and to keep showing up even when things are hard. That’s what prepared me for this position.”

King served as class president at Jalen Rose Leadership Academy and is a proud member of the National Honor Society. In 2020, he was named a national finalist in Project Soapbox, a youth public speaking competition he participated in at DBG. His powerful speech on redlining helped him learn to use his voice to speak out about systemic issues.

Outside the classroom, King mentors DBG students, helps distribute shoes through the Kicks for Kids Foundation, and expresses himself through poetry with InsideOut Literary Arts. He’s also an alumni of the Skillman Foundation’s President’s Youth Council, and a recent recipient of the Detroit Pistons Black Excellence Scholarship, recognizing his impact and leadership across Detroit.

At DBG, we provide tools, resources, academic support, role models, mentorship, and opportunities that enable students to discover their talents and passions and become lifelong leaders. DBG alum King Bethel embodies our mission and continues to make an impact.

Congratulations, King. Your DBG family is behind you all the way!
