DBG Detroit is a family and when it comes to Thanksgiving, our family celebrates in a big way. From an adrenaline-filled flag football game to cozy moments sipping hot chocolate and roasting s’mores by the bonfire, our Turkey Bowl and Family Potluck dinner Nov. 22 was an evening filled with gratitude, togetherness, and true DBG spirit.
“This is my first time participating,” said Isaiah Burke, DBG’s high school academic support specialist. “It was a really cool opportunity and great to see the kids showcase their talents and how much they’ve been working hard over the football season.”
For every student at DBG, there was something special to enjoy. Some took the field to play flag football, while others swished gold pompoms and cheered from the sidelines. Creative minds got busy painting faces, and a lively halftime show boasted original raps, dances, and trumpets. The Turkey Bowl isn’t just about football; it was about showcasing hard work, talent, and a shared sense of purpose.
“This event means the world to me. My kids love DBG, and I as a parent love DBG for the kids,” said Javon McCoy. “It’s such an all-around great program. I’m just so happy to see the kids out enjoying themselves – just good, clean family fun.”
The theme was clear for everyone in attendance: it’s all about the kids. Lexus Legardy, DBG’s athletic manager, embodied that sentiment as she juggled coaching duties on the sidelines and guiding players and audience members alike.
“The Turkey Bowl is all about being thankful and bringing together our community,” Legardy explained. “That’s the big thing – showing that we all need each other.”
From the camaraderie on the football field to the delicious potluck dishes shared afterward, the Turkey Bowl was a powerful reminder of what makes DBG special: its people. Despite the cold weather, the warmth of connection and gratitude brought everyone closer, creating memories to last a lifetime.
