Two hardworking DBG students are the latest recipients of $10,000 college scholarships from the Shamrock 555 Foundation. They were recognized recently during the organization’s 6th annual Golf Outing.
Kenneth Cain, Jr., a DBG graduate who will be attending Lawrence Technological University this fall to study mechanical engineering was honored along with Rylee Humphrey who is headed to Grand Valley State University to study psychology as a pre-law major.
Created by our beloved mentor, supporter and friend, Stephen Luigi Piazza, Shamrock 555’s mission is to “continue supporting the endeavors of organizations dedicated to the betterment of children’s educational and social needs.”
The foundation carries on the philanthropic legacy of SLP who passed away after courageously battling cancer. Stephen served on the advisory board of the Downtown Boxing Gym and was one of our biggest advocates and champions.
Both students were recognized for their hard work and determination. In 11th grade, Rylee planned to enroll in a local cosmetology program. DBG worked with her to identify a array of career pathways that best fit her personal skills and goals. Through these conversations, she narrowed down her pathway to law.
During her time at DBG Rylee has participated in dozens of financial literacy workshops led by DBG staff and local financial institution partners, and countless community service projects. She worked as a summer Junior Coach via Grow Detroit’s Young Talent. In addition, Rylee is a current DBG Fund Development intern and a recipient of multiple awards including the Grand Valley Charter Schools Alumni Scholarship, Thomson Foundation UPREP Award, and Michigan Achievement Award.
Kenneth is a current National Science Foundation research assistant helping to collect data for an ongoing research study on DBG’s transformative STEAM Lab. He has participated in numerous engineering workshops at DBG led by universities and corporations, also served as a summer Junior Coach, and attended multiple DBG-sponsored college tours.
We are so proud of our amazing students. Scholarships like these help lessen the financial burden of higher education and break down barriers to pursuing a college education. We are truly grateful for the Shamrock 555 Foundation’s ongoing support.
